I am a equipment fanatic and am constantly trying to improve on the rod/reel/line combinations for specific applications. I will pass on to you my thoughts on these combinations that I use. I am also currently testing a new/alternative to existing mono to spectra connections. This connection system involves using small diameter spectra to create a 'nail knot" which take the place of crimps or serve. The unique feature of my connection is what I do to the mono under the spectra. I am working on a description of this connection and will post it when I have completed the text and the corresponding photos. I will detail how to make this connection on "big line" for 200# COW yellowfin tuna and for the 40# Guadalupe Island outfit used to soak a bait 100 yds from the boat to hook a 100# tuna. With crimps, it costs around $300 to get started and additional crimps are a dollar each. I am expecting to be able to make about 300 nail knots for about $12.
